My grandparents were among Bourbon Hanby's first customers. My dad grew up going there. By the time I was doing my A-levels, Ian Towning asked if I'd come in on weekends to help. Three years later I was running most of the day-to-day operation of one of London's most respected antique jewellery dealerships, a Chelsea institution on Sydney Street just off the King's Road.
The business ran entirely on paper. Every consignment was a Word document. Every repair was a handwritten note. I tried to fix it. I built a spreadsheet to track stock, consignments, and repairs. It never took hold.
On 26 March 2024, two men walked into Bourbon Hanby armed with hammers. They attacked Ian and his security guard, smashed the cabinets, and left with an estimated £200,000 worth of jewellery. The moment was caught on CCTV and made national news (BBC, LBC). I was on holiday when it happened. I got the first flight back and walked in the next morning.
What I walked into was not just a ransacked shop. It was weeks of work I never should have had to do.
With no proper stock records, piecing together what had been stolen meant going through every item by hand. Cross-referencing year-old stock checks. Pulling old photographs of the showroom. Freezing CCTV frames to identify pieces in the cabinets before the attack. It took weeks. And even after all of that, there were gaps. Items we knew were gone but could not prove existed. Claims we could not make because the documentation had never been created in the first place. Months later, things surfaced that we had missed entirely.
The robbery did not create the problem. It just made it impossible to ignore.
Every watch and jewellery dealer I have spoken to since has a version of the same story. Not always a robbery. Sometimes a consignment dispute. Sometimes a watchmaker who loses a piece. Sometimes an insurer who needs documentation that does not exist.
